Sixteen

Alaric had been right; there was a way out of her territory—a fresh tunnel carved by Salman's men. The tunnel was dangerous, with reinforcing columns threatening to bow and break at any moment. But Reema knew that the work of other miners couldn’t amount to what she had learned she could expect from the members of her own gang. They were the best of the best.

She expected a few offshoots within the tunnel that would lead to Salman’s territory, but to her surprise, she found none. It was a straight shot to the Hole, leaving him completely cut off from the territory that he had ruled for so many years. It seemed that the discovery of the Djinn was enough to do it, to have him renounce the entirety of the mines for the myth that lingered in that black marble.

It was a long trek through the tunnel, with the hairs on the backs of their necks raised, fearing the earth might cave in and end their miserable lives at any moment. Once they reached the cursed Hole, they stepped through the sunlight filtering down from above and passed down through the tunnels that led to Salman’s old territory.

It felt like a day or more had passed before they finally found the tunnel that led to her sacred place.

They were solemn, all of them, from Omar and Ra’ad falling into unusual silence to Asif stewing in his anger.

Reema fully expected the secret entrance to her cave to be collapsed too. So it was with a surprise that she found it still open, and the barely audible sound of humming and a crackling fire coming from within.

Her rage sparked to life, and as fast as she was, she couldn’t beat Omar and Ra’ad scrambling through the hole, or Asif from going in after them.

As she crawled through, Hadi’s happy hums were cut short by a surprised shout. Then he began to scream, his voice dancing off the rose quartz crystals.

To Reema, it sounded like sweet music.

She was relieved to find that the cave was untouched, though she had been right about the tunnel they’d carved: it was collapsed, and the weeks they’d spent forcing their way through the unyielding earth were wasted.

Perhaps Hadi had been content to keep this beautiful, sacred place to himself.

As if Reema would ever let that happen.

Inside the cave, she was met with the sight of Hadi being mercilessly beaten by Omar, Ra'ad, and Asif. Hadi lay crumpled on the ground, his body jerking with each blow. His face was already swollen, one eye completely shut, and blood smeared across his features.

Omar drove his boot into Hadi's ribs with a sickening crunch. The sound of bone breaking reverberated through the cave, mingling with Hadi’s guttural cries. Ra’ad followed with a savage kick to Hadi's back, the force of it lifting him off the ground momentarily before he crashed back down.

"Why, Hadi?" Ra’ad shouted, his voice a mixture of rage and betrayal. "Why did you do it?"

Hadi tried to speak, but all that came out was a garbled plea as blood bubbled from his mouth.
